ClimeFi publishes its CDR Pathway Taxonomy

A consistent naming convention and set of definitions for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) pathways and subpathways

The durable CDR market does not yet share a common language. Buyers, suppliers, registries and market platforms often use different names for the same approach, and labels are sometimes applied incorrectly. This makes projects harder to compare and harder for buyers to navigate with confidence.

As experts in durable CDR, we apply one consistent set of names and definitions to every project we assess. We are making this taxonomy public so that anyone looking at a ClimeFi due diligence report, market report or portfolio knows exactly how each project has been classified.

It builds on existing classifications rather than reinventing them, aligning as closely as possible with registries, market platforms and regulatory frameworks.

Pathway taxonomy

The taxonomy sets out seven pathways and eleven subpathways, each representing an end-to-end CDR system, covering the full chain from atmospheric CO₂ capture or uptake through to the final storage mechanism.

  • Biochar: Artisanal Biochar, Mid-tech Biochar, Industrial Biochar
  • Biogenic Carbon Capture & Storage (Bio-CCS)
  • Other Biomass Carbon Removal & Storage (BiCRS): Subsurface Biomass Sequestration, Geological Biomass Sequestration, Bio-Oil Sequestration
  • Direct Air Capture with Carbon Storage (DACCS)
  • Enhanced Weathering: Enhanced Rock Weathering, Microbial Carbon Mineralisation
  • Ex-situ Mineralisation
  • Marine CDR: Direct Ocean Capture, Alkalinity Enhancement, Other mCDR
    ‍

These pathways and subpathways are now reflected across the ClimeFi Due Diligence Portal and our reports, so you’ll see the same classifications wherever we assess or report on a project.
