Sustainable Aviation Fuels
Scope 3 reductions through SAFc portfolios
We help corporates with material business travel or air freight emissions build and manage SAFc portfolios, using the same buy-side model we apply to durable CDR.
The opportunity
The market-based instrument for aviation emission reductions
Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is a drop-in fuel made from biogenic feedstocks or synthesised from CO₂ and hydrogen. A SAF certificate (SAFc) is an instrument that decouples its environmental attributes from the physical fuel, enabling corporates without direct access to SAF supply to support its production and claim the associated emission reductions.
For companies with material aviation footprints, typically business travel or upstream freight, SAFc is the market-based instrument for emission reductions, in the same way that CDR is for removals. The SBTi Aviation Sector Guidance recognises SAFc as a valid reduction towards science-based targets.
